Gone Green....
Being "green" is in these days...and while sometimes that trend borders on the ridulous at other times we stumble upon some really good messages. The Strawbridge Art League chose "Go Green" as the topic of their most recent juried show recently and asked artists to think about messages in several specific areas. The selected entries will be displayed at the Brevard Art Museum for the month of November. I am honored to be selected to be in the show which opens on Nov. 6 at 3:00 pm with an awards reception...you are invited to come by then or later and see what the local artists had to say about our environmental issues.
The pieces that were not chosen for the Museum show will be hung at the Henegar Center (I will have one there as well) and that portion of the event will kick off the evening of Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. Hope to see you there as well.
Most of us don't think of art as a political statment but if you think back through some of the events you in your life time there is usually an icon or a graphic that is associated with it...this is art! And while artists tend to comment on situations as they are happening it is often years later that the actual piece they did becomes popular. As you enjoy the outdoor festivals this fall look to see if you recognize any politcal overtones or radical statements in the art you see. This may be a challenge because artists, much like writers, often resort to symbolism or metaphor in sharing their opinion. If you wonder about the message or if you doubt what you are seeing, ask the painter...he or she will be thrilled you took the time to try and understand the piece. I promise that both of you will enjoy the discussion that follows.
Meanwhile, could anything be controversial about protecting our environment? Could there be any thing radical in a show about our lagoon? Hmmmmm, join me at both openings and let's find out. Maybe one of these pieces will provide the icon that galvanizes Brevard County to get serious about our resources.
